Tonga signs Action Plan with UNDP

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has signed the Country Programme Action Plan (CPAP) with the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga.

Developed in close consultation with Government and key stakeholders, the CPAP 2008-2012 will respond to current and emerging development challenges in Tonga in the areas of Governance, Environment and Poverty Reduction.

The five year plan will assist Tonga in exploring opportunities for financial services and products to meet the needs of the rural population who hardly have access to banking services.

An induction workshop will also be undertaken for Members of Parliament and assistance will be provided in exploring the possibilities of having civic education - which will enable Tongan citizens to participate and manage their affairs at the institutional and individual level.

UNDP will also look at forming partnerships to develop tension reduction projects that engage vulnerable people such as the women and youth.

In addition, UNDP will assist in the implementation of the Sustainable Land Management project in an effort to promote sustainable land use practices using participatory community techniques.  UNDP will also assist Tonga meet its Paris Declaration commitments through support in the establishment of a Stakeholder Round Table for Climate Change and aid improved coordination and management of environment and energy assistance from development partners.
